Comic Con Comes to Saudi Arabia

Comic Con came to Saudi Arabia for the second time, convening thousands for Riyadh’s  ultimate convention for comics, manga and more.

The landmark event, arranged by Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority (GEA), ran from November 23-25, and offered a platform for fans to meet international celebrity guests and comic characters during the three-day festival.

There were stimulating discussion panels with international cosplayers and voiceover actors. Among the many panelists were Kyle Hebert (Gohan, Naruto, Dragon Ball series), Jason Liebrecht (Wolf Children, Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa), Lisle Wilkerson, (Tekken Series, Virtua Fighter), and Samantha Inoue-Harte (Final Fantasy: Unlimited, Sakura Wars). Chia-Chi Wang freelance graphic designer and owner of Excel Comics engaged with aspiring comic designers.

International stars were on hand for the event, including “Game of Thrones” star Pilou Asbaek. Commenting on his experience in Saudi Arabia, Asbaek said, “I see it’s a country becoming more and more progressive. I felt very welcomed and blessed to be here.”

Others from “Big Bang Theory,” “Underworld: Awakenings,” and “Lost Girl” also came to the event.

Attendees mazed through the event’s workshops, eSports tournaments, food options from a (might we say, heavenly!) medley of food-trucks, all while shopping for some exclusive collectibles inspired by the exhilarating world of anime, manga, graphic novels, video games, toys, TV shows and films.

Comic Con Arabia had numerous occasions to win prizes such as a fully paid trip to Spain and many other giveaways from social media competitions. Additional prizes were provided for the winners of the eSports tournaments and competitions.

Many attendees praised the gathering. Of note, Riki LeCotey, a cosplayer from the United States, was in attendance. She said, “No matter where I go in the world, it feels like a giant, geeky family reunion. That’s what this feels like. It’s like I’m with my Saudi Arabia geek family!”
